US President Donald Trump pledged to "take care" of North Korea after its latest ballistic missile launch -the first after a two-month hiatus - which his Pentagon chief said was its highest yet, signifying an expanded threat.
"If they don't hang together, they're going to hang separately in 2018", said Stephen Moore, a fellow at the conservative-oriented Heritage Foundation who advised the Trump campaign.
G. William Hoagland, a former Republican staff director for the Senate Budget Committee, warned, "When Republicans control the House and Senate and the White House, a government shutdown under their watch just looks like they can absolutely do nothing". His empty chair photo opp showed he's more interested in stunts than in addressing the needs of the American people. "Poor Ryan and McConnell relegated to props".
The president, flanked by two empty chairs for no-shows Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, said he was "not really that surprised" they didn't come, even if the seating chart suggested otherwise.
They said: "Given that the president doesn't see a deal between Democrats and the White House, we believe the best path forward is to continue negotiating with our Republican counterparts in Congress instead". Schumer and Pelosi said they pulled out of the meeting because of a tweet Trump sent earlier in the day attacking them as weak on illegal immigration and bent on raising taxes.
German Police Destroy Possible Explosive at Potsdam Christmas Market
The police evacuated and cordoned off the immediate area and said they're still assessing the contents of the defused package. Last December, 12 people were killed and 56 injured when a lorry was driven through a Christmas market in Berlin.
After Trump tweeted he didn't see a possible deal with Democrats, Democratic leaders backed out of a meeting with the president.
But Republican leaders McConnell and Ryan dismissed the Democrats' offer and challenged them to attend the White House meeting if they wished to negotiate over a spending plan. "Democrats are putting government operations, particularly resources for our men and women on the battlefield, at great risk by pulling these antics". Or will they vote against it and shut down the government? "We had a phenomenal meeting with the Republican senators", he said. The president's invitation to Democrats "still stands, and he encourages them to put aside their pettiness, stop the political grandstanding, show up and get to work".
And on Capitol Hill, some progress was made on Tuesday during talks on the Republican tax bill.
John Boyega Reveals Finn's First Word in Star Wars: The Last Jedi
I say nearly nothing, because now his occupation has been revealed... and it's an unusual one, when it comes to Star Wars movies. Rey is a fascinating character and we all want to know what her deal really is.
On December 8, the US government will run out of money (though the deadline may be temporarily extended to later in the month).
How this increases the potential for a shutdown: Trump's sticking on issues important to his base makes him less likely to compromise with Democrats, who want to advance polar opposite issues important to their base. That deadline is now coming up.
He claimed, inaccurately, that he never skipped a meeting with a sitting president.
UP civic polls: BSP's gains signal possible structural change in voting pattern
Adityanath said the BJP will now look forward to achieving the goal of one hundred per cent success in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has tweeted his congratulations to CM Adityanath and party workers on the BJP's emphatic victory.
The acrimonious back-and-forth between Mr. Trump and the Democratic leaders began, as has become customary, with a presidential tweet.
