Ganie and two other militants, both foreigners, including a nephew of Jaish-e-Mohammad chief Maulana Masood Azhar, were gunned down by security forces in an encounter in the Aglar area of Pulwama last night.
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir, Muneer Ahmad Khan said they will "thoroughly investigate" how this weapon landed into the hands of this Jaish group.
The other two have been identified as Mehmood Bhai, the so-called divisional commander of Jaish in the south and Wasim Ahmed Ganie.
An armyman - Lance Naik Vrahma Pal Singh - was also killed in the encounter.
"While the cordon was being laid, the militants opened fire in which one army jawan and a civilian got injured", the spokesperson said.
