On average, each daily smoker and recent quitter took nearly 2.5 more sick days in 2010 compared to employees who have never smoked, the conference board found.
According to Telegraph.co.uk, the Tokyo-based marketing firm Piala Inc.is granting non-smoking employees an extra six days of paid holiday per year after those employees complained they worked more than staff who took frequent breaks to light up.
An AFP report quoted the company's spokesman Hirotaka Matsushima as saying, "Because our office is located on the 29th floor it takes at least 10 minutes for a smoker to go down to a common smoking room in the basement and come back".
