Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco told a news conference that an ICON A5 light sport aircraft belonging to Halladay crashed into the Gulf of Mexico about 10 miles (16 km) west of St. Petersburg, Florida, on Tuesday afternoon.
The sheriff's office marine unit responded to the downed plane and found Halladay's body. Investigators could not immediately confirm how many people were in the plane at the time of the crash.
Halladay won several awards throughout his career, including the AL Cy Young in 2003 and the NL Cy Young in 2010.
He was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies before the 2010 season and won another Cy Young in his first year with the team.

Halladay will be eligible for the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2019. He played for both the Toronto Blue Jays and the Philadelphia Phillies. "It is with the heaviest of hearts that we pass along our condolences to Brandy, Ryan and Braden", the statement said.
Halladay has since posted several other tweets about his A5. Not only did Halladay throw a ideal game at one point during the regular season, but he would end up throwing a no-hitter during his first career postseason game against the Cincinnati Reds later on in October during Game 1 of the NLDS.
His death on Tuesday comes less than a month after he took to Twitter to post photos of the aircraft.
In heartbreaking footage, Halladay's wife expressed her early trepidation of her husband's passion. In the video, Halladay says he grew up around airplanes.
