US President Donald Trump's administration opposed a planned vote on a controversial Israeli bill that critics say would amount to de facto annexation of Jewish settlements surrounding Jerusalem, a US official said Sunday.
"It's fair to say that the U.S. is discouraging actions that it believes will unduly distract the principals from focusing on the advancement of peace negotiations".
But the Israeli official said on condition of anonymity that the bill needs "diplomatic preparation", declining to elaborate further.
David Bitan, the Likud party's parliamentary whip and a close Netanyahu ally, told Army Radio the vote set for Sunday is delayed because "there is American pressure claiming this is annexation". But in the occupied West Bank, anger is continuing over illegal Israeli settlements. The bill stops short of actually annexing the settlements to Israel, however.

"The Americans turned to us and inquired what the bill was about. As we have been coordinating with them until now, it is worth [continuing] talking and coordinating with them".
The official confirmed a meeting on Sunday in Jerusalem between Jason Greenblatt.
