Glen De Vos, CTO of Delphi explained the reason behind the purchase of NuTonomy that Delphi wants to become a leader in Autonomous vehicles and they are especially looking forward to scale up in commercial vehicles.
The price tag for Delphi's purchase isn't uncommon nowadays, as automakers and tech companies have been working at a ferocious pace to bring autonomous cars to life.
"I feel great about the fact that this acquisition puts the combined team in the pole position to be one of the winners in the autonomous vehicle race", Iagnemma said during a call with reporters Tuesday to announce the deal. This will increase Delphi's customer base and expand its market.
Delphi Automotive Plc said on Tuesday it will buy self-driving auto software startup nuTonomy for $450 million (roughly Rs. 2,931 crores), helping to put automated vehicles using its technology into commercial use in 2019, a year earlier than planned. Nutonomy adds over a 100 employees to Delphi's rank where over 100 people already work on autonomous vehicles.

The acquisition of nuTonomy will roughly double Delphi's autonomous driving team to about 200.
Earlier this year, Delphi said it would spin off its powertrain assets to focus on autonomous driving.
"It's the intelligent architecture that allows all the advanced safety systems, all the autonomous driving software, all the infotainment software to operate effectively", Clark told the Times.
De Vos said that the combination of the two software "stacks" will give Delphi a more robust offering. The company began to test its software on vehicles in 2016, but is still now under research and development, but the company already has operations running in major cities such as Singapore. The fact that nuTonomy's platform can be readily adapted to different auto types is a big plus for Delphi, which presumably hopes to sell the system to multiple automakers with varying technical requirements.
