SHEHYNI, Ukraine (Reuters) - Former Georgian president Mikheil Saakashvili and a crowd of supporters barged past guards to enter Ukraine from the Polish border on Sunday after a prolonged standoff between Saakashvili and the Ukrainian authorities.
Mr Poroshenko vowed to punish those responsible for Mr Saakashvili's breach of the border, while observers said they feared the ugly political spat would hit Ukraine's global image.
Georgia on December 4 stripped former leader and reformer Mikheil Saakashvili of his citizenship as he had acquired a Ukrainian passport to serve as governor of the strategic Odessa region.
Speaking to reporters in Rzeszow, the 49-year-old Saakashvili said that Poroshenko's actions, "the way how he mobilized the whole of the state apparatus" against him, "means that he feels some existential threat" from the former Georgian president. Saakashvili says the decision was politically motivated.

Having survived the ups and down, bumps and bruises of his rookie season, Wentz emerged as a leader on and off the field. In the receiving end, Matt Hazel posted 60 yards in four receptions while James Quick added 45 yards in four catches.
The ex-President changed his plans on crossing the border.
Saakashvili earlier claimed that Ukrainian police stole his passport shortly after he had crossed the border. He is an enemy of Ukraine just as he is an enemy of Georgia.
Saakashvili denies the accusations branding them a political witch hunt.
Saakashvili and his travel companions, including former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko and Ukrainian officials and journalists, later boarded a bus to the border. And it is all the same to me who breaches the state border, whether fighters in the east or politicians in the west.

Haryana government spokesman Satish Mishra said a case had been registered against the Dera management on this count. The forensic team from Roorkee is searching Dera chief Ram Rahim Singh's den, where he raped 2 women followers.
Yury Lutsenko, Prosecutor General of Ukraine said late on September 10 that participants and organizers of illegal border crossing in Shehyini will be held responsible.
The Ukrainian president added that he would respect any court ruling for Saakashvili. "There should be direct legal accountability", Poroshenko said, according to the Kyiv Post. Saakashvili maintains that the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees in Geneva says he has the right to be in the country to appeal.
Hundreds of Saakashvili supporters broke through a police block and burst into the neutral zone where they paraded victorious with Saakashvili into Ukraine, cheering his nickname "Misha" and "glory to Ukraine". One of the law enforcers refused to tell a Georgian reporter the reason why the checkpoint was closed and warned that the area was mined.
While there is sympathy for Mr Saakashvili in Ukraine - where many people believe the ruling elite is increasing pressure on critics and failing to fulfil its reform pledges - polls suggest he would not be a major challenger in elections due in 2019.
