In a blog post on Thursday (via The Verge), the firm said the unit will "focus on connected vehicle and autonomous technologies, including smart sensors, machine vision, artificial intelligence, high-performance computing, connectivity solutions, automotive-grade safety solutions, security, and privacy".
The new autonomous driving investment comes after the South Korean company completed its acquisition of Harman, which makes auto navigation systems and technology for cars to communicate with each other and infrastructure.
The first to receive funding - 75 million euros - was TTTech, a Vienna-based firm with specialty in networking and safety controls.

The spinout is working on networked safety control systems that help make industrial and transport electronics systems safer and more reliable.
Young Sohn, President and Chief Strategy Officer at Samsung Electronics and Chairman of the Board of Harman, said: "We are excited to play a leadership role in supporting and shaping the future of smarter, more connected vehicles". Instead, Samsung will work with automakers and other mobility companies to "develop the next generation of automotive innovation". "In partnership with OEMs and startups, we will make the driver and passenger experience safer, more convenient, and more enjoyable". But the firm said it will not enter the car-manufacturing business, and will instead work with auto makers on their projects.
"This strategic business unit demonstrates our commitment to answer that call and as a collective force and will combine our resources and networks".

Earlier investments by Samsung in the automotive sector include AImotive and Renovo for automated driving; Quanergy, TetraVue, and Oculii for sensors; Autotalks and Valens for connectivity; and Graphcore for high-performance computing.
