The historical marker outside the grocery store where 14-year-old Till was accused of whistling at a white woman while visiting his family has to be refurbished due to the damage by vandals, said Allan Hammons, whose company manages the Mississippi Freedom Trail. It stands outside of the run-down Bryant's Grocery & Meat Market, where Carolyn Bryant, a white shopkeeper, said Till had whistled at her in August 1955.
The sign makes up part of the Mississippi Freedom Trail, which displays markers at civil rights sites in the state, Reuters reported. And then, over the weekend, someone had peeled off the back of the marker, which contained vital photos and information about the infamous 1955 case.
The two men were ultimately acquitted of Till's kidnapping and murder by an all-white jury, though they later publicly confessed to the killing "in a paid interview with Look magazine", the AP reported.
Black Lives Matter protesters clash with Pride parade
Justin Trudeau spent Sunday marching in the Toronto Pride Parade and celebrating the event's central theme: inclusivity. Groups with messages opposing police at Pride made their presence known at parades in Chicago and Seattle as well.
Hammons told the AP, he doesn't know whether the latest defacement of the Till sign is racially motivated or just random vandalism. "Vandals have been around since the beginning of time".
A historical marker for Emmett Till has been vandalized, less than a year after receiving bullet holes in October.
Ever since his mother made a decision to have an open-casket funeral so that his brutalization was apparent for all to see, it has served as stark motivation for civil rights activists.

Another sign, marking the spot where Till's body was pulled from a nearby river, was pockmarked with gunfire in 2016. "Clear evidence that we've still got a long way to go", he wrote.
In January, Bryant, who remarried to become Carolyn Bryant Donham, told Vanity Fair that she had fabricated her testimony against Till. Specifically, she told Tyson, "the part about Till grabbing her and being sexually crude to her 'was not true, '" The Washington Post's DeNeen Brown reported.
Hammons said he would be repairing the marker to the tune of $500. "It's not a defacing, but an erasing", the the Emmett Till Memory Project's Davis Houck told The Jackson Clarion-Ledger.
