State officials say the first cases of H3N2 canine influenza virus, or "dog flu", have been confirmed in Florida.
"Dog flu" has been circulating throughout the USA since 2015, but this is the first time it has been confirmed in Florida.
Symptoms of the virus include sneezing, nasal discharge, decreased appetite and lethargy during the first few days of infection. Symptoms only show up in 80 percent of dogs, and the good news is most dogs recover at home without any further complications.
Dog flu can spread by immediate or indirect contact with people or places which are contaminated by the sickness. H3N2 made headlines that year after an estimated 1,000 dogs in Chicago contracted the virus.

The flu first surfaced in China, Korea and Thailand, where scientists believe the virus, originally affecting birds, jumped to dogs roaming live bird markets, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association.
"Veterinarians in central and north Florida are treating many dogs that are suspected to have dog flu", the release said, adding that all of the dogs under treatment are in stable condition. If left untreated, it could lead to pneumonia.
"It's very contagious, so you have to be careful", Dr. Marta Lista of Trail Animal Hospital in Miami, told the Herald. Most dogs don't have immunity and they don't have vaccines.
Although less common, the disease has also been known to spread to cats.
